THE IGFA REPORTKää PENDING RECORDS

Among several impressive records pending for young anglers are two western Pacific big-game fish, both caught fast winter, both by 10-year-old anglers (their catches pending as smali-fry records). Fishing the Kiama Canyons off Australia in November, Rhiannon Hailing of Warilla, New South Wales, caught a 260-pound, 5-ounce mako shark by drifting a gemfish and amazingly landed it in 15 minutes. Kiwi youngster Sam Marsh of Pahia, Bay of Islands, bested a 293-pound, 3-ounce striped marlin fishing off Cape Brett in late December. The big stripe went for a Top Gun lure; its fight lasted 45 minutes.

A 24-pound mullet snapper is pending as the junior angler record for Kyle Vincent of Hobe Sound, Florida. The 14-year-old made his catch last December at Panama's Tropic Star Lodge after the fish took a live

bonito. The angler managed to winch it to the boat in about three minutes.

An 80-pound, 1-ounce black drum is pending as the new 30-pound-class record for Jennifer Mugrauer of Jesup, Georgia. She caught the big black on sguid in December while fishing C Reef off the Georgia coast, landing it in about 15 minutes.

For fly-rodder Richard Keatley of Norfolk, Virginia, a 51-pound, 5-ounce striped bass made his day last Sept. 13 when the fish nailed his Clouser Minnow near the Bay Bridge. Keatley landed the big bass after a half-hour battle.

An unusual number of records are pending for one angler, Heather Harkavy of Coral Springs, Florida, including 15 various line-class and tippet catches for 3- to 7-pound Pacific barracuda, all caught in December out of Golfito, Costa Rica.

Killer Cold Can Come from the Depths

The extended period of frigid air that blanketed Florida in January chilled estuaries, bays and rivers. The result was a well-documented fish kill primarily of inshore species such as snook, seatrout, tarpon, mullet and many others. But in some years, the deadly chill has come from below during the hottest time of year.

In June and July of 1980, the Gulf Stream brought cold water from the depths nearly up to the surface off Palm Beach, Florida.

"The water got down to 52 degrees. It was just in that bottom 15 or 20 feet," says Phil Shuff, a fisherman and dive charter captain at the time. "I could hang above the cold water but still see the divers below me. It was like looking through a mirage on the desert; the thermocline was that severe." Above a 110-foot bottom the

The recent cold-snap fish kills in Florida reminded anglers how vulnerable many inshore species are to cold, but sudden upwellings may impact reef dwellers as well.

temperature changed at around 85 feet, and on 80-foot reefs the thermocline was around 65 feet deep, but cold water never made it as far inshore as the 60-foot reef line.

"I saw a lot of dead green morays and parrotfish. It really hurt the French angelfish and queen angel-fish too," Shuff says. Divers were bringing fish into warmer, shallower water by hand. Snapper, grouper and similar species seemed to migrate inshore instinctively.

Early summer Gulf Stream cold upwellings aren't uncommon, though they aren't usually as pronounced as the 1980 event. Shuff reports that the cold water this year seems to be only inshore — the Gulf Stream appears to be running normally — yet he found water below 50 degrees in Palm City, and from 53 to 57 degrees on the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter.
