Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic

June 1-6

Based in historic Venice, Louisiana, the sport-fishing capital of both Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, the 6th Annual Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic returns to newly expanded Cypress Cove Marina for what is sure to be another blast on the bayou. "It is our intention to utilize both Cypress Cove Marina and Venice Marina to truly ¡tut Venice, Louisiana, back on the map as the premier sport-fishing capital of die Gulf South," says tournament director Steve Thomas.

The CCBC has consistently paid $500,000 in cash and prizes — not too shabby for a "little village at the end of the road."

The 2010 CCBC will again feature a modified-release foimat for billfish, along with dolphin, tuna, wahoo, top youth and top female angler catego-lies as well as the William R, "Bob" Potter Memorial Trophy for top boat. The Optional Categories for 2010 will range from S500 to S3,OCX) and will again prove to be a healthy purse. As in past years, participants may depart from any Gulf port by videotaping their departure, but all fish and release videos must be presented at Cypress Cove Marina. "The recent hurricanes may have slowed us down, but they have not affected tile fishing. Heck, I weighed in a 211-pound yellowfin in November for Capt. Kevin Beach," says Mike Ballay, harbor master at Cypress Cove Marina. Contact Steve Thomas at 985-732-7280, or visit www .comefishla.com.

The Big Rock Blue Martin Tournament

June 11-19

The Big Rock presented S106,413 to 19 charities in 2009, which propelled the organization's cumulative cliari-table contributions above the S2 million mark. Not bad, not bad at all.

In fact, it was good for all because when billfish competitors register for the 52nd Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, they'll take their first step toward winning part of a swollen cash purse that will once again exceed SI.8 million.

That's qtiite a change from the original Big Rock prize back in 1958, which was a child's red wagon filled with a purported 500 silver dollars (though the winner claims to have

Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship

July 2-18

In 2009, the BTC awarded $900,000 in cash and 585,000 in prizes during the three-event series and saw an incredible race ending in the closest margin of victory in the history of the series. Winners of the BTC receive a fantastic prize package and recognition for winning the most competitive series in tile Atlantic. All BTC tournaments are qualifying events for the IGFA Offshore World Championship. If you love large blue marlin fishing sprinkled with white marlin bites, then Bermuda is a must for you in July.

"Fish the Blast, stay for the Classic and then fish the Sea Horse" is a mantra chanted by a few elite and one envied by anyone with a heartbeat. The Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship is a seties of three events.

The Bermuda Billfish Blast

July 2-5

Strategically held during the Fourth of July, the Blast runs in concert with the World Cup Blue Marl in Championship. Teams fishing in Bermuda have won the World Cup five of the past seven years. Most, if not all, teams fish both the Blast and World Cup, providing simultaneous local and global competition. Crews and anglers wake tip on the Fourth to the true possibility of winning a quarter-million in the Blast and another half-million in the World Cup while earning valuable BTC points.

''Just a couple of years ago, we l>egan encouraging teams to make the voyage to Bermuda to fish (he Blast, stay for the Classic and finish with the Sea Horse," says Dan Jacobs, tournament director. "It's an adventure, no doubt, but going from 18 boats at inception to 59 last year just confirms this is perhaps the greatest lightly tapped big blue marlin fishery on the tournament trail."

In 2009, the Billfish Blast added a fresh option: a winner-take-all, most-billfish-rcleascd division.

,;'lhe guys with the highest skill level, who release the most fish but choose not to bring one back, can now win the tournament," says Jacobs.

Contact Dan Jacobs at 407-5714680, or visit wwwbermudaMlfish blast, com.

Bermuda Big Game Classic

July 7-11

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the BBGC tournament, the one that started it all in Bermuda, is the second leg of the series in the Bermuda Triple Crown and the one that anchors the series. In 2009, the champion team won a record 5320,000 in cash and prizes. The Classic is the centerpiece of the BTC, offering the largest purse at a cool half-million in 2009, with great parties all week and an awards banquet second to none. Because this is an anniversary year, expect a great turnout and a few special amenities for those who attend.

A release trophy and cash prize will also be awarded to the team with the most release points for the tournament. Awards also go to the angler, lady angler and junior angler (age 17 and younger) who tally the most points. Eligible species for the tournament include blue marlin, white marlin, spearfish. sailfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and dolphin. Contact Dan Jacobs at 407-571 4680, or visit www, bermudabiggatneclassic.com.

Sea Horse Anglers Club Billfish Tournament

July 14-18

The third and final leg is the Sea Horse Anglers Club Billfish Tournament, This is Bermuda's oldest billfish tournament and has been under the stewardship of the Sea Horse Anglers Club for 37 years. The Sea Horse joined the Classic and Blast to create the BTC series in 2005 and comprises the final event and Triple Crown awards ceremony. The Sea Horse Billfish Tournament kicks off at the popular Docksider Pub watering hole and finishes with a laid-back Royal Bermuda Yacht Club awards presentation.

World Cup Blue Marlin Championship

July 4

This event pits some of the top fishing teams from around the world against each other in a unique, one-day, winner-take-all tournament.

The World Clip recognizes only one winner, there is no second place and there is no other big-game tournament like it in the world. Going on its 26th year, the World Cup Blue Marlin Championship is a one-day event that spans the globe in search of a single species. The finest offshore anglers and crews compete across the world's oceans on the Fourth of July, spanning all time zones, to see who can catch the heaviest blue marlin over the 500-pound minimum.

Each angling team will fish in their time zone from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There are no restrictions on where teams can fish. Some of the popular hot spots for recent winners include Bermuda, the Cape Verde Islands, Hawaii and North Carolina.

In 2009, Stefan Olson, aboard Wound Up off Bermuda, weighed in an 865-pound blue to win the tournament, a pot full of money and a team invitation to the IGFA Offshore World Championship;

Communication is by phone and e-mail to World Cup headquarters in Foit Lauderdale, Florida, where several phone lines and computers are centered. Those interested can also follow real-time tournament updates on the event's website.

Last year 78 percent of the billfish released were by kids 16 years or younger. Dalton Meyer won the junior angler division with three releases fishing aboard the Penta

While there are many winners in the Bart a tournament, the biggest winners — the Boys & Girls clubs of coastal Carolina —-have received more than $550,000 during the six-year event, "My goal is to raise SI million for the clubs," says Barta.

This tournament is unique to North Carolina, as it mandates a 100 percent billfish-release, single-hook, dead-bait format with honor-system scoring. "Your word is your bond here; there's no need for video proof or lie detectors. Why would 1 question the word of a friend? We do it all on a handshake, and that teaches these kids not just about fishing, but also integrity,'' says Barta.

No money is distributed, but more than 300 trophies are given out for billfish release, wahoo, dolphin, tuna and king mackerel. The BB&GET is also pan of the North Carolina Governors Cup Billfish Series. Contact Cynthia Barber at 252-808-2286. or visit www.bartabil Ifish. com.

Teams can win substantial cash prizes for accumulating the most points for blue marlin, white marlin and spearfish. The first-place team earns S25,000, while second- and third-place prizes are SI 0.000 and S5,000, respectively. Teams can also enter one fun fish (dolphin, tuna, wahoo or released sailfish) per boat per day to add to their point total.

All marlin must be tagged and released unless their weight exceeds 600 pounds.

In 2009, Capt. Marco Gaona led his angler Jim O'Malley to a catch-and-release of a blue marlin estimated at 550 pounds. But despite the size of that fish for the area, his Shockwave team missed winning the DKWM Tournament By less than three points. The big marlin hit Mylar-skirted ballyhoo just before noon. But because O'Malley, a Tampa, Florida, resident, was using 40-pound-test line, it took y/i hours to release the fish, leaving too little time to fish for other species in the fun-fish category in order to secure the lead.

For information, contact Scott Greene at 305-292-2710, or visit www . k eywestmarlin. com.

White Marlin Open

The White Marlin Open is the world's largest billfish tournament and has become a must-fish event for thousands of anglers from all over the world. Through the years, the tournament has grown into a huge spectator event as well, with massive crowds gathering nightly to watch the weigh-ins and partake in the fun. festival-like atmosphere that includes food, drinks, craft vendors and artists. With lots of great restaurants, a beautiful beach and fun boardwalk, Ocean City, Maryland, is tiie perfect home for the family-oriented White Marlin Open.

Now in its 37th year, the tournament attracts hundreds of boats, all vying for a chunk of the more than S2.2 million in prize money due to be paid out in 2010. last year's event was one of the most exciting ever, with the weigh-in of a new state-record 1,062-pound blue marlin caught aboard the No Problem and the heaviest white marlin weighing in at 93 pounds, caught by Shawn I Tea ley on the Orion.

Although the heaviest white marlin is the most valuable fish, the format of the White Marlin Open allows ibr many winners. With die daily release points and daily game-fish categories, anglers do not have to catch the biggest fish of the tournament to win prize money.

Mid-Atlantic $500,000

Aug. 15-20

Deemed sport fishing's "Main Event," the Mid-Atlantic S500,000 remains a leader in conservation and customer service, not to mention its staggering payout. Said to be the first million-dollar marlin tournament, the Mid-Atlantic had 136 boats last year, all searching for a piece of the SI,761,602 total cash purse.

This event is also no slouch when it comes to conservation: Eveiy single marlin landed in the 15-year history of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 has been inspected by a team of scientists from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, It is this type of diligence that helps scientists leam more about one of the least understood species in the ocean.

Participants may depart from Cape May, New Jersey, or Ocean City, Maryland, which opens the door for some of the smaller lxjats in the region. However, last year the effects of Hurricane Bill kept it down to just 11 boats headed offshore on the final day. But Scott Steele of Catonsville, Maryland, aboard his boat, Topless, saved bis best day for last. Early in the evening's weigh-in session, he pulled up to the scales in Ocean City with a new tournament-record white marlin of 95 pounds and won the heaviest white marlin categoiy and 5653,375.
