Hell's Bay Boatworks' reputation as a leader in the shallow-water boar marker has been well chronicled over the years, and the release of its latest offering, the Boca Grande 18, culminates years of design, testing and consultation with top guides and anglers.

I had the opportunity to run this boat during the summer at a Suzuki media outing in Key Largo, Florida, where a brand new Boca Grande was matched with Su7.uki's new DF90. Needless to say, the rig was impressive.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

All Hell's Bay skiffs are built with the kind of precision and attention to detail that you would expect from a premium skinny-water manufacturer. The Boca Grande is no exception. A tunnel-hull design, it is constructed of Kevlar, carbon fiber and S-glass in a closed-mold process in which a vacuum-bag system injects resins into the mat and distributes them for consistency.

The resulting hull of the Boca Grande stretches out to 18 feet, 2 inches in length with an 80-inch beam, and it checks in at 625 pounds. Hell's Bay recommends a power rating of between 90 to 110 hp for this boat, though it can be equipped with upwards of 130 hp.

The Boca Grande features Lenco highspeed electric trim tabs, a beautiful non-skid deck and Stiffy push-pole holders. For dry storage, it boasts large compartments with all hatches equipped with rubber gaskets throughout. It also comes with a custom aluminum trailer, a spare tire and mounting kit. The Boca Grande can be purchased with a side console or a center console with an ice chest/seat combination ($1,000 option).

RUNNING AND FISHING

In Key Largo, with two people operating in choppy conditions, the Boca Grande rose quickly to plane in AXA seconds and hit a top speed of just under 43 mph. Its minimum planing speed was 191/2 mph at 3,000 rpm, and it reached 30 mph in nine seconds.

With its integrated sprav rails, the Boca Grande delivered a very dry, comfortable ride and held tight in sharp turns. The boat is obviously comfortable in bigger waters, and with a 30-gallon fuel tank, it has good capacity.

Yet while it runs like a champ, the real charm of the Boca Grande is revealed as you come down off plane. Like all Hell's Bays, this boat was born to glide over skinny water. Whether targeting tarpon in the Florida Keys, redfish in coastal Georgia or big seatrout off the Texas Gulf Coast, the Boca Grande is a true fishing machine.

With a draft of IVi inches, the Boca Grande polls with ease and great maneuverability, turning on a dime. Its poling platform is constructed of sturdy, lightweight aluminum with SeaDek, a soft, nonskid surface padding that's easy on the feet.

Integrated rod racks with fly-rod tubes are standard and will make the fly-fisher happy. Also standard is a 30-gallon release/Iivevvell system.

The Boca Grande is a serious skiff for serious anglers. No matter what part of the country you fish, this boat offers a very fine choice. — MM

B-17 BOMBERS

They may be unconventional, but they're awfully pretty. B-17 unveils its Marlin St. Thomas signature series, a broad collection of flashy, new baitfish, squid and other imitations.

I he new offerings include divers, deep-divers, crippled divers, shallow runners, convulsing divers — pretty much everything you could think of, mimicking virtually every type of prey imaginable. The Marlin series is handcrafted in the U.S. and designed to catch virtually all types of species, from inshore to offshore. Visit www.b-I7swimsuit .com or www.marlinstthomas.com.

LOOK GOOD, SEE FISH

New from Smith Optics is the Hideout, a high-performance fishing sunglass that blends a striking design with one of the best polarized lenses in the business.

Pulling from the company's marketing slogan, "Look Good, See Fish," the Hideout is ideally suited to fit those with medium-sized faces and is available in eight custom polarized lens options, including Polarchromic lenses, which respond to changing UV conditions. The wrap-style lenses are created from optical-qtiality Techlite glass, and their curvature offers anglers excellent peripheral vision, a necessity when stalking the flats or watching for birds offshore. The sunglasses also feature Hydrophilic Megol nose pads and temple pads for slip-free comfort.

Hideout glasses offer a lifetime warranty. MSRP ranges from $149 to $159. www.smithoptics.com

TAME A TARPON

Tarpon season may be a few months away, but now's the time to start preparing, and Cortland's new Precision Tropic Plus Tarpon line is a good option for tossing flies to silver kings.

Available in WF 10 to 12, the line features a 15-foot, clear intermediate sink tip (or "Ghost Tip") that allows for a stealthy retrieval just below the surface while the rest of the line floats high. Constructed with a hard and durable yet smooth coating over a 30-pound braided mono core, the line withstands tropical heat well and is offered in a clear/aqua color combination.

Precision Tropic Plus Tarpon lines also feature overweighted heads and a short front-taper design, which assist anglers in turning over big, bulky tarpon Hies quickly and accurately. MSRP is $65. www.cortlandline.com

"BIG" REEL PERFORMANCE

If you're in the market for a reel with the moxie to stop big tarpon, billfish, tuna or trevally, take a look at the new offering from Loop Tackle.

The Opti Big is the latest offering in the company's Opti reel series. Designed for big game, the reel holds a I2-weight line and 500 yards of 50-pound backing. Its waterproof, sealed drag system stops fish fast, and the unique, V-shaped spool delivers speedy line retrieval. Yet the reel is light, weighing just 427 grams.

The Opti Big utilizes mechanized components from leading European manufacturers, all of which are built with stainless-steel and anodized aluminum. All screws are secured with Loc-Tite and are salt tolerant. www.looptackIeusa.com

ENGINE PROTECTION

For those who regularly operate skiffs in skinny water or around dangerous underwater hazards, the Blackfin Skeg may be worth checking out.

The skeg is designed to protect an engine's lower unit from unseen obstructions. It is made of a proprietary high-impact composite material featuring two tapered wings on each side for

BLUESPEED AHEAD

MotorGuide says its new Great White VariMax trolling motors help generate three times more battery power from a single charge compared with other 5-speed transom-mount motors in its class.

That's because of a new technology called BlueSpeed Digital variable speed control, which MotorGuide claims leads to significantly reduced amp draw. BlueSpeed provides ongoing indications of available batter)' voltage when in the off position and should result in less time worrying about running out of power or getting stranded on a flat.

The motors offer a unique push/ forward and pull/reverse control handle and come with a durable, I'A-inch-diameter stainless-steel shaft which should hold up well in tough saltwater environments. The motors also offer a Taper-Lock mount that eliminates slack and ensures solid engagement in seven positions, www.motorguide.com

structural reinforcement and lift. It also features a sacrificial node on the bottom designed to prevent the engine's skeg from hitting objects.

The Blackfin requires no drilling or changes to your boat or original outboard motor, and the company says it can be installed in an hour. The Blackfin Skeg is fitted onto an engine with a specially designed adhesive that provides a flexible barrier against the walls of the skeg.

The Blackfin Skeg can be ordered online or at Cabela's. MSRP is $82.95. www.blackfinskeg.com

Big redfish are the premier species in 'Bama approaching fall. They can be found feeding on the flats looking for crabs and crustaceans that hide in the grass and mud. Keep your fly's action on the bottom realistic — it will trigger the strike. Come on out and sight-fish for big reds! Capt. Dan Kolenich; www.captdankolenich.home .att.net; 251-422-3474

As summer comes to an end, snook will stack up around the beaches and inside bays near passes. With fall approaching, cooler days start to show up, and the fish begin moving inside. Snook, reds and trout are present on the flats and in the mangroves. Baitfish patterns should work well as the fish fatten up before the winter months. The Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon will offer up tailing reds this month. During warmer days, it's smart to hit the water early and search the shallow grass flats while the fish are eating. Small flies imitating shrimp and crabs are tops. Contact us for a chance to chase

Redfish continue feeding in the shallow flats with the approach of fall. They are looking for small baitfish, shrimp and crabs. The clear water and low tides offer anglers great sight-fishing opportunities through October. Trout will also make their presence known and attack an assortment of topwater or shrimp patterns. Capt. Rawling Pratt-Thomas; www.charlestonsaltwater fishing.com; 843-834-1061

The inside waters will give anglers a chance to catch some redfish, but the best bet is the false albacore fishing. Albacore should start biting strong in October and only get better into November. The fish feed on baitfish, typically small glass minnows, so small imitations offer a great way to hook up with plenty of these speedsters. Capt. Rob Pasfield; www.thelastcast.com; 252-728-3907

Bonito and false albacore invade Western Long Island Sound in the fall as they chase schools of menhaden. There's no better way to stick one than with the fly rod! Peanut-bunker patterns and epoxy sand eel/silverside patterns will be the go-to imitations this time of year. Eric Johnson; www.westportoutHtters.com; 203-831-8036

Honduras lhe barrier-reef flats of the Bay Islands are fishing well right now. Higher tides draw happy, feeding bonefish anti permit — and there are no crowds.
