FISHING AND WHITEWATER RAFTING ON THE RIVER KYMIJOKI

Kymijoki is one of the largest rivers in Southern Finland and collects water from an extensive catchment area. Lake Paijanne and the Mantyharju and Valivesi watercourses discharge their waters into the Gulf of Finland via the river Kymijoki. The landscapes in the lower part of the area have been shaped by huge water masses. Some 4,000 years ago, lake Saimaa also discharged it waters into the river Kymijoki via various watercourses along it.

The river Kymijoki has extensive areas of rapids and you can go by boat or rubber dinghy from one fishing site to the next. The bed of the rapids is mostly slippery glaciated rock, with stones on top. Visibility during the summer is about 1-2 metres. The water is slightly brown/greenish.

Fishing and tackle

Rapids fishing is quite challenging since the rapids are so expansive only a very small part of a rapids can be worked at a time and there are many others also trying to

catch fish. However, the river is mainly fished by casting from the bank. Wading trousers are necessary to facilitate moving around. The main species fished are asp, pike, grayling and rainbow trout, depending on the season. Pike is a likely catch when the river is not frozen. Normal spinning tackle is required, rods are usually 8-10 feet (240-300 cm). Medium-sized spoons, wobblers and spinners work well. Fly-fishers can generally manage with class 6 tackle and floating line. Flies for grayling are "the normal" grayling flies such as Red Tag, Zulu, larvae, pupae and nymphs. When fly-fishing for asp, tie a No 6-2 streamer to the line, dark colours work well. Early and late summer is the best time to catch asp.

Time The product is valid from 1 May to 31 October, at other times by arrangement.
