The evolution of an average person into a fisherman is marked by two developments: an increasing wealth of practical outdoor know-how and a burgeoning collection of stuff.

The former entails a lot of methods, tricks, and knowledge that make you more efficient, safe, and comfortablethings like knowing the best hat to wear on a particular day, how to remove a fishhook from someone's (or your own) finger, the proper procedure for measuring a fish, and filleting that fish so that not one bone is found by your dinner companions. Some of this comes from experience; some must be learned. But all of it is important. The second developmentan accumulation of rods, reels, lures, hooks, line, and fliespresents a more immediate need, so we'll look at some solutions for that first in this part.
